Something wonderful is happening to our coastal beach communities. They are being discovered. When my parents first arrived in Seattle in 1944 from Chicago and New Mexico, they wanted to visit the ocean. Of course there was no internet then, but Dad researched the local travel agencies to see where they could get accommodations. Nothing. He had first read about the North Beach communities from a book by Nora Berg titled Lady on the Beach about two lost souls from Seattle hunting for a peaceful place to live out their days. The book was well enough written to be reviewed by Time Magazine and talked about the tough winters and hardships of living off of clams, timber and fishing throughout that area. The book has since been re-printed and you can purchase copies from the local museum.
Dad finally found accommodations at a Motor Hotel called Dittos in Pacific Beach (now the site of the local Fire Department). Pacific Beach enjoys a Modern, well equipped station with four engines and an aid truck.
Now between the towns of Moclips to the north two miles (with 4-star restaurant Ocean Crest Resorts) and Seabrook to the south one mile, Pacific Beach is on the radar. Developers look for sites within three hour drive from metropolitan areas and discovered Pacific Beach which is the same distance from Seattle or Portland. Now homes that were selling for $100,000 just a couple of years ago are twice that or more. In fact a lot only off the Hwy between Seabrook and Pacific Beach just sold for $385,000.
I’ve always said our ocean beaches are under the radar and under-priced. Consider Californians who are used to being close to the ocean but with skin cancer a huge threat from sunshine, what better than our beaches with two months on sunshine ONLY. Several opportunities for new businesses in the area going all the way into Hoquiam (think bio-fuel).
