South Park lies south of SODO between the Duwamish waterway and Georgetown to the east and east Marginal Way/West Seattle to the west. The Duwamish people were the original inhabitants of the area, using the land to fish, hunt and for agriculture. While Georgetown became industrial, South Park remained mostly agricultural and was home to many Italian and later Japanese farmers. South Park became a city in 1905 but was annexed to Seattle in 1907. Well actually half of it was annexed to Seattle and one half of SouthPark remains in unincorporated King County. When the Duwamish was re-channeled, the area became more industrial and much of farming was abandoned.
Today, South Park is zoned predominately industrial and a highway runs through the neighborhood. However, there is a strong residential area and a recently constructed community center, a new King County Library, a remodeled school and even a skate-board park that provide pride for the neighborhood.
The streets are tree-lines with sidewalks and on a summers night you can hear music from the homes in the area and children playing. It is quite a contrast to the semi-trucks and industry all around.
