Pioneer square is one of the City’s oldest neighborhoods. It has its early ties to the Yukon Gold Rush and many of the buildings reflect the character of that era. Today it is an eclectic neighborhood of retail and restaurants, housing, and offices. Sited adjacent to downtown and the waterfront, Pioneer square is a tourist destination.
Historic tours of the area are common and recently an audio tour of Pioneer squqre has been developed. The Smith Tower (built by the Smith-Corona Typewriter Co in 1914) was the tallest building West of the Mississippi until the 1970’s and is now planned to be converted to condominiums. There is a private home in the very top that used to be used for parties and had the most fabulous collection of Chinese art and the best view anywhere. It is one of the last building to still have human elevator operators. During the Boeing strike of 1948, my Dad was one of them! Mardi Gras is one of the biggest parties of the year in the Square and many jazz singers got their starts in the many clubs in the area. Years ago, underground where the new Pergola stands in the heart of Pioneer Square, were public toilets. How progressive.
Once home to a thriving art community, most of the living lofts have been turned into office spaces or upscale condominiums, pushing the artists further South or out of the area entirely.
