My neighbors just returned from Mazatlan. Deana is also a massage therapist - how fun is that for a neighbor?? Deana works through the large hotels in Seattle and has massaged many celebs and visiting politicians. This was Deana’s first trip so I shared one of my favorite trips to Mazatlan during Carnivale last year.
I traveled with the Seattle-Mazatlan sister city association as guests of the City of Mazatlan. Anyone wanting to travel, in a group, and be wined and dined and toured by the city and members of that city’s association should check out one of our 22 sister cities. We stayed in the Golden Zone
. For years old town that sits between the Golden zone and the cruise ship terminals was in a sorry state of disrepair. When I was there last year, the city of Mazatlan was making a strong effort to bring back the rich history and restore the buildings in old town to attract more tourists to that part of town. They have done a fabulous job.
They have many turn of the century buildings including the Liceo Mazatlan, the former Colegio Guadalajara building and the fabulous Coppel House. The Angela Peralta Theater is magnificent. Strolling around old town is fun and informative. We witnessed a re-enactment of a famous naval battle from a party at a private residence near the port in old town. The ships “battled” with fire works and there must have been ten bands playing throughout the town with food stands and people dressed for Carnivale.
The large parade takes place over two days and is a sight to behold. People begin lining the streets and settling in along their balconies hours before hand to enjoy the parade of people before the Carnivale parades start. As guests of the , we had reserved seating and were able to sit in the front row, margaritas in hand.
A highlight of the day was a trip to a small outlying town where we passed Agave farms, Cock fighting ranches, horse pastures and many small villages of just one or two businesses. We were deliverying computers to a grade school. The students had spent months preparing entertainment for us and it was exciting to watch their expressions as we clapped and sang along with them.
If anyone responds to this blog, I will post pictures of the parade, the village, the parties etc. Oh, a side note:
Upon arrival, I went to my room, changed into a smart linen number and freshened up. The group including the Mayor of Mazatlan and Jan Drago from City of Seattle were waiting for me in the restaurant in my hotel but on the beach. As I approached the circular restaurant, I wasn’t sure which direction to go - so I went right - RIGHT INTO THE SWIMMING POOL! It actually took me a few seconds to figure out what had happened. I just wasn’t paying attention. The people on the balconies watching the sunset all cheered and tipped a margarita to me as I emerged from the pool like a drowned rat. My purse was full of water, camera and watch ruined, hair done for. My friends were all trying to comfort me, but you know what? The water was warm, I changed into something comfortable and enjoyed the evening and the rest of the trip. I would catch people pointing to me when we would attend an event and I’m sure they were relaying the story of the pool. I was glad to provide the entertainment and I wouldn’t have missed the trip for anything - and am looking forward to returning.
Lots of foreigners are purchasing in Mazatlan so I would rate this area as a good buy. Well established government, lots of growth, new golf courses as well as a beach that has been enjoyed by tourists for a hundred years.
