Once upon a time this area was called Chinatown, but in an effort to be the most PC city of all, Seattle chose to call it the ID (International District). An effort, lead by local leader Ruby Chow has slowly brought it back to its original name. It is truley International in flavor and citizenship.
The Chinatown/ID is located north of SODO nestled between Pioneer Square and Downtown Seattle. The Chinese immigrated to this area in the 1860’s and provided labor for many of the public works projects. Japanese immigrants moved into the neighborhood shortly after. Filipinos have been living and working in the ID since the early ’30s and continue to have a strong presence today. The ID was also home to many of the jazz clubs and the African American community had a strong influence in the neighborhood as well.
Today this district is a major transit hub, with the Amtrak station and Sound Transit commuter rail station lined by Metro buses. The area has also seen tremendous growth in office development, particularly near Union Station. Residential development has also incresed. Uwajimaya recently relocated to a new site, expanding their grocery store and adding housing units above. Chinatown is a favorite for late nite dinners and lunchtime dim sum. In the “old” days a favorite hangout for politicians was Gasparetti’s Italian Restaurant. One of the most scenic spots in Chinatown is a the East end of Washington street where the Kobe Park sits nestled between Nippon Theatre and I-5.
