South of Seattle is a small community called Georgetown. Georgetown was incorporated as a city in 1904. Six years later it was annexed to the city of Seattle. In the mid 1800’s, the area was primarily agricultural. Towards the turn of the century as the population of Georgetown increased, industry began to take shape. The Rainier Brewing Company opened in 1882 and the Duwamish was re-channeled in 1914, creating a more direct waterway to Puget Sound. More industrial uses located to this area and the King County Airport was constructed at the southeast end of Georgetown.
Today, Georgetown is an eclectic neighborhood of industry, retail, and residential. In the past ten years artists have discovered the charm of Georgetown and have opened studios and lofts. Many of the historic buildings remain and the community has recently worked with the City of Seattle to move the historic Hat ‘n Boots structures to a park setting in the heart of Georgetown.
One of the more famous characters to come out of Georgetown was Fan Dancer Gypsy Rose Lee who was immortalized by Natalie Wood in the movie about her life.
