My 95 years young Dad is still with me from Grays Harbor County. My Dad was a Franciscan Monk that when he got to Seattle in the early 40’s found work at The Boeing Company. At age 62, we convinced him to retire as the average death of a Boeing Retiree was 1.5 years after retiring - so we wanted him to enjoy his retirement. Well that was over 30 years ago and Dad figures between his Machinist retirement and Social Security, he has had over $500,000.00 in benefits (not counting medical) since his early retirement and he is still sharp and healthy!
On Friday Dr. Dan Church, President of Bastyr University invited us to a Holiday Concert in their world-renowned chapel (many movie sound tracts are recorded their because of the perfect acoustics). Breathe of Fresh Aire choral group surrounded us with wonderful sounds. I cried during the singing of Shenadoah just thinking of those Civil War soldiers gazing on that beautiful valley after seven long years of war.
Saturday we had a Waissel Party at my condo with Master Cook Robert delighting us with fondue and specialties. We laughed, sang, ate, exchanged silly presents and that’s about all I can remember. What in the heck is in that Waissel Bowl anyway??
Sunday I invited my family and church buddies to attend the tailgate party in the Tower Club. This event held before each Seahawks home game is one of the best tailgate parties in Seattle. New York Vinnie and the Channel 13 crew did a post game segment on the party and interviewed Dad while they were there. Vinnie tried to stump my Dad by asking him statistics from years ago, but at 95 his mind is sharper than most people my age - so he aced the questions and the interview. Dad concluded by singing his philosophy of life - “Life is just a bowl of cherries” - an old Rudy Vallee favorite.
Birthday for my sister Mim later that night. My nephew Matt proudly displayed his JOURNEYMAN PLUMBER license. Yea!! Mim will be bringing an Oscar to our annual Academy Award party this year so make your reservations early for this one. It is fun to get your picture taken with an authentic Oscar.
